Aulus guide (2.2.16a): jungle build, emblem, combo and counters

Role and playstyle

After his Season 42 buffs, Aulus became one of the most banned fighters in the jungle and EXP lane; in mlbbhub's October 18 data his ban rate passes 80% in Mythical Glory and above. The 2.2.16a hotfix on October 14 reshaped him: his enhanced attacks no longer scale with level and heal less, while his low-rank ultimate damage went up. The result is a jungler who shines in early skirmishes and in short, decisive team fights.

Recommended build and emblem

• Items: Tough Boots, War Axe, Brute Force Breastplate, Rose Gold Meteor, Queen's Wings, Malefic Roar.
• Flex swaps: Immortality over Malefic Roar for late Lord fights; Sea Halberd against shields or high-HP fighters; Warrior Boots against physical-heavy teams with little crowd control.
• Emblem: Fighter set with Firmness, Seasoned Hunter and War Cry.
• Battle spell: Retribution in the jungle. Flicker if you play him in the EXP lane.

Skill combo and key tips

• Hit a monster or minion with a skill before a fight so you enter with the enhanced attack window already open.
• Order: enter with Skill 1 (Aulus, Charge!) for speed and control immunity, stun with the first cast of Skill 2 (The Power of Axe), use the recast to jump onto your main target, open Undying Fury once you have contact and finish with enhanced attacks.
• Skill 1 now has a 15-second cooldown at every level. If you spend it to run away, you will have no way into the next fight, so save it for the engage.
• Avoid long fights before you reach roughly 300 physical attack. By timesaver's math, his healing is weaker than before below that point and about the same above it.
• Aim to close the game around the 15-minute mark: with a lower attack speed ceiling, ranged marksmen can outscale him late.

Counters

• Good against Aulus: control heroes that stop his dash and dive. Our engine highlights Minsitthar, Kaja, Chou and Phoveus, and in mlbbhub's statistics zone-control mages such as Alice, Yve and Zhuxin have the biggest win rate edge against him.
• Aulus is good against: tanks and slow frontliners. mlbbhub's data shows a clear edge against Gloo, Tigreal and Natalia, and our engine also marks him as strong against tanks.
• Items: his healing is lower now but still matters. Physical carries can cut it with Sea Halberd, mages with Necklace of Durance.

What changed recently

In 2.2.16 (September 16) his skills started to trigger his basic attack effect and heal him on every hit, and the first cast of Skill 2 gained a stun. In 2.2.16a (October 14) his passive attack speed became a flat 20%, enhanced attack damage fell from 135 to 120, Skill 1 now waits 15 seconds at every level, and his low-rank ultimate damage rose.
